Witsand - The Breede River is the home of the big Cob, amazing fishing experience for the whole family!

The Breede River has been known to produce Kob of up to 65kg, this is an experience of a lifetime to be able to catch one of these river giants.

Other than Kob the river is filled with lots of Grunter, Blacktail, Elf and Galjoen.

Most common fish species to catch in the breede river

Blacktail (dassie)

Best Bait - Prawn 
Minimum size - 20cm

The head and body of the blacktail is usually silvery and there is a black blotch on top or on the side of the peduncle below the rear end of the dorsal fin. Large adults are almost uniformly black while juveniles have 8-10 faint black bars dorsally on the body. Adults also show dark bars at night. Blacktail from Namibia are generally bigger than South Africa fish and often have yellowish flecks on the body. Blacktails north of Cape Vidal and Sodwana Bay are smaller (rarely over 30cm fork length) and the black blotch is mostly on the side of the peduncle.

Elf (Shad)

Fishing Strategy:
They often tug at the bait which pulls the rod tip up, or on other occasions they might nibble on the bait and so careful judgement is need to consider when to strike
Bait:
Spinning is the usual way of catching shad when they are on the bite. Otherwise shore anglers can use a whole or cut sardine as bait.
Tackle:
  • Heavy tackle is not required
  • Standard beach rod
  • 6 - 8kg line
  • Hook sizes vary from 3/0 to about 6/0
  • Use a short (+-10cm) light steel trace on your hook as shad often bite off the hook

Galjoen

Mimimum size - 35cm
Bag limit -  2

Habitat:
This fish mostly keeps to shallow water where it feeds.
Bait: This fish will take white (sand) mussels, wonder worms and small crab, but it's favourite bait is red bait.  
Fishing Strategy: The Galjoen is a strong fighter for its size. It will either take the bait with one bite or toy with the bait.


Tackle:
  • Light tacklee
  • Rod no longer than 2.5 meters
  • 6 - 8 kg line
  • 1/0 or a 1 hook

Garrick - Leervis

Minnimum size -70cm
Bag limit - 2

Habitat: This fish is a coastal species that is normally found in the surf zone. They have been seen at depths of around 50 metres.
Bait: Live bait using mullet, Soft bait spinning, Rapala pinning.
Fishing Strategy: Garrick are game fish, and many anglers live for the thrill of hooking up this magnificent species. They are a challenge to land as they will fight till the bitter end.
Tackle:


  • 16 - 25 kg line
  • Standard beach rod
  • Wire trace should be used

Mullets/Harders

It is a difficult challenge to catch any of the Mullet species of South Africa with rod and reel in hand. The best and easiest way to catch the Southern Mullet is with any type of beach, seine or throw net. This is your best option of catching a Southern Mullet (Harder)

Spotted Grunter (tiger)

Bait: Caught on sardine (pilchard), or squid, but this fishes favourite bait is prawn.
Fishing Strategy: This fish will provided a good fight. Mature species will make a grunting noise when caught and taken out of the water. Hence the name "Grunter".
